You've been here. Second visit, kitchen table, quote printed. The drawing is accurate to the centimetre. The sample board sits next to it: the oak veneer, the composite countertop, the matte lacquer front.
And the customer looks at the grey SketchUp export, nods politely, and says they'll think about it.
They're not stalling. They genuinely cannot picture it. A flat grey model plus a 10 by 10 cm sample chip asks them to do the rendering in their head, and most people can't. The deal doesn't die at the price. It dies in the gap between the drawing and the finished room.

Why SketchUp exports look the way they do
A SketchUp export is a screenshot of your working model. That's the whole answer.
SketchUp is a modelling tool. Its viewport is built for accuracy while you draw: flat shading, outlined edges, textures that tile uniformly across a surface. There's no bounced light, no real reflections, no shadow softening, no depth to the materials. The countertop you'd quote at €400-plus per running metre renders as the same flat swatch as a laminate one.
That's not a flaw. It's a construction document. It tells you and your installer exactly what goes where. It just doesn't tell the customer what living in it will feel like, because it was never designed to. Selling and building are different jobs, and the default export only does one of them.
What do photoreal kitchen renders cost? (render suite vs 3D artist vs AI)
There are three traditional fixes.
- Render plugin or suite (V-Ray, Enscape, and their kitchen-specific cousins). Cost: A licence at roughly €475 to €1,400 per year depending on the tool and tier, plus a render-capable machine. Turnaround: Final V-Ray frames take minutes to hours per view; the fast real-time tools export in seconds but still need a trained operator. Why it fails at the kitchen table: Someone on your team has to own the licence, the GPU, and the skills.
- Outsourced 3D artist. Cost: Roughly €300 to €1,000 or more per view. Turnaround: Three to seven business days, often longer at studios. Why it fails at the kitchen table: Every material change adds a revision round measured in days, and rounds beyond the included cap are billed.
- Grey export plus physical samples. Cost: Free. Turnaround: Instant. Why it fails at the kitchen table: Asks the customer to do the rendering in their head.
The render suites produce excellent, accurate images. The outsourced artist produces beautiful ones. The grey export next to the sample board is what most independent builders actually show, hoping the customer has a good imagination.
All three work. None of them work at the kitchen table, during the meeting, for a two-person showroom.
The render-to-photo workflow, step by step
Here's the fourth path. The tool in this walkthrough is Timagine, which converts a 3D render export into a photoreal image with your actual material samples applied. The workflow takes four steps.
Step 1: export the camera view from SketchUp
Set up the view you'd show the customer and export it as a 2D image: PNG, JPG, or WebP, up to 25 MB. No plugins, no special settings. The export you already make for your quote PDF is the export you need. About ten seconds.
Step 2: attach the real samples you quoted
This is the part that matters. You're not picking "oak" from a generic library. You photograph the actual supplier sample from your board, with the iPad camera or an uploaded photo, and attach it to the surface it belongs to.
The system analyses each sample automatically: colour, finish (matte, satin, high-gloss), pattern (veining, planks, herringbone), and scale. You can add a scale note like "12 cm wide planks" or "60 by 60 cm tile with 3 mm grout" so proportions land right. Each sample is saved to your Catalog for reuse, so photographing your standard range is work you do once per sample, not once per image.
Step 3: set the scene
Optional, and fast. Pick a time of day (morning light, golden hour, evening), interior lights on or off and warm or cool, what's outside the window (garden, overcast, city), and the atmosphere (empty, staged, lived-in). If you want the output pixel-aligned to your export, set the camera lock to strict. Leave everything on auto and it still works.
Step 4: generate
Tap Generate. About two minutes later you have a photoreal image of the kitchen you drew, with the finishes your customer actually picked. About the time it takes to pour a coffee, which means you can do it live, at the table, while they watch.
Every Output is auto-checked against your source render before you see it: geometry, camera position, and whether each material was applied to the right surface. If a Generation fails those checks, you're not charged for it. One tap to retry.
What it preserves, and why that matters for your quote
The critical property of this workflow is what does not change.
The geometry stays locked: walls, windows, cabinet runs, the island, appliance positions, proportions. The camera stays where you put it. Fixtures keep their finish. The only things that change are the surfaces you attached samples to.
Why does that matter commercially? Because the image has to match the quote. A generic AI image generator invents a kitchen: gorgeous, and nothing like the one you priced. If the customer falls in love with a cabinet run that isn't on your drawing, you've created a problem, not closed a deal. Here, the customer approves the exact kitchen on your quote, in the exact materials on your order list. The image and the paperwork describe the same object.

The Output is a realistic AI approximation of your design, not a photograph of a built room, and each image carries an AI-generated disclosure. Your customer should know that. In practice it changes nothing at the table, because what they need is to see their choices, not to be fooled.

When not to use it
This workflow is a sales tool, not a technical one. Skip it when:
- You need millimetre-accurate technical validation. The Output is an approximation. Dimensions, clearances, and installation details come from your drawing, not from any generated image.
- The image would serve as contractual documentation. Quote from the plan. Use the image to help the customer decide, never as the binding spec.
- Pattern layout must be install-exact. Veining direction and plank joints will look right and read true to the sample, but the installer follows the drawing, not the picture.
- Your export has no clear camera view. A top-down plan or a wireframe won't convert well. Export a perspective view a person could stand in.
- You'd present it as a photo of a finished build. Don't. It's AI-generated and labelled as such. Honesty here protects your credibility with the customer.

Will it change my design?
No. Timagine locks geometry, layout, camera position, and fixtures by default, and every Output is automatically scored against your source render before you see it. Only the surfaces you attached samples to change. If the check finds the geometry drifted, the image is flagged and you're not charged.
Will the render look AI-generated or fake?
